Home Made Cleaner

I have to start by saying that obviously these are my own opinions so try it for yourself.
OK, so I have seen countless Pinterest pins for a home made cleaner made of equal parts of blue liquid Dawn dish soap and vinegar. Yes it works well! It cleans soap scum like magic and makes your sinks and faucets shine like new. However, if you use it you are wasting money!! Dawn is one of the most expensive dish soaps on the market and there is no need to use that much. Try this recipe instead. It works just as wonderfully and REALLY cuts down the cost and the amount of suds. This is a multipurpose cleaner that cleans everything from floors to mirrors and windows, yes windows, completely streak free!. I use it on almost everything!! I keep a bottle in each bathroom and one in the kitchen. I can't even begin to think about how much money I save on cleaners. I no longer buy Windex, Scrubbing Bubbles, Mr. Clean etc. This literally costs pennies per bottle. I wouldn't even be able to figure it out for at least a year because that is at least how long the ingredients are going to last. Give it a try, I am SO glad I did.

Recipe:
Put 2 tablespoons of vinegar and 2 tsp of borax in a spray bottle, (I use a funnel and put the borax in first). Add hot water to dissolve borax. Leave room at top of the bottle so u can add 1/8 cup yummy smelling dish soap. Fill the rest of the bottle slowly with cold water so u don't get suds.

The borax can be optional, I use it because it kills germs. Also my sister doesn't always use Dawn and says it still works. I use Dawn, so it is just a matter of personal preference.

  2. How much water do you add to these amounts of vinegar, borax and dish soap?

    1. 24 OUNCES...according to the other recipes I've seen that call for EXACTLY THE SAME INGREDIENTS, HOWEVER...all the other ones I've seen called for: 2 Tablespoons of Borax & 2 Tablespoons Vinegar & 2 Tablespoons of Dawn IF you're using it as a "409" type daily cleaner - with other uses, anywhere from 3 DROPS TO 8 OZ of Dawn! [Can you imagine the sudsy nightmare using 8 oz of Dawn to 24 oz of Water!!]
I know from using Borax myself for numerous other things 2 TABLESPOONS would be best, then adjust Dawn according to your task :)
**BORAX IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DISSOLVE ~ I ALWAYS BOIL WATER TO COMPLETELY DISSOLVE IT, IT'S WORTH THE TIME BECAUSE THE STUFF KICKS BUTT ON PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING!!

  3. I agree, how much water. I understand you may add water to fill the bottle; however, what size of spray bottle do you use?? Do you use it on windows?

I love Borax. It does kill germs and has multiple uses. I also prefer Dawn dishwashing detergent. I don't stick with a certain "color", but I have decided it works better than other brands.

  5. just tried it on glass, cannot believe it NO STREAKS, I will be trying it on everything else next. I also added a little oxy clean because I mix oxy clean and borax together for laundry, it was the only thing I had to use.
    worked ok though

  8. Thanks so much for this recipe. I used it on the grease-spattered glass front panel of the Range-hood exhaust above my kitchen stove and it cleaned it brilliantly in no time. I'm in Australia and we don't have Blue Dawn, but I used what dish detergent I had. I actually doubled the quantities of detergent, vinegar and borax, to give it a bit more 'punch' and used an empty 500ml (approx 1 pint?) spray bottle, and topped it up with cold water. (still cheaper than the half & half vinegar/detergent recipe mentioned)

  9. Nope....Just tried it, and this recipe isn't even in the same universe as the half Dawn/half Vinegar recipe. I'll try this on mirrors, but I'll have to re-clean my shower with the real recipe now. The gel consistency of the other recipe makes ALL the difference.

  10. And YIKES the streaks on my mirror now. Dumping this down the drain...I must have a different gauge for "clean" and "streak free" than other readers. hmm. Baffled.

  11. Ha!Ha! I made this cleanser, or I thought I did. I didn't read carefully enough. I made mine with washing soda instead of Borax. I quickly learned that this wasn't going to work. I created some sort of mad scientist experiment with bubbles spilling out like a volcano. Let me try again.

  14. I also love the Dawn and vinegar "magic juice" , as I call it. I have So many ways . #1, as I read in comments, i Love the Sudsy lather, which is in 1bottle for tub scrubbing , and bottle 2 ,in bathroom as well, i keep a "after shower spray" with almost All vinegar . Little bit blue Dawn and topped off with rubbing alcohol" (oh. Iv gotten in my head that the Antibacterial Dawn is better for the scrubbing [Use the Orange]. , i even take it step further by finishing off the bottom of tub with vinegar sprayed mixed with EO. Tea tree and Eucalyptus mainly. But one thing i Never see .And i read ALOT!!! Is,this is in kitchen, for my dishes. I fill bottle up about 1/4 with soap and funnel in the hot vinegar.(I microwave it, literally till boiling ,let cool for min, and funnel it.)I simply squirt my post, pans ..coffee mugs. Love it .And keeps sponge sanitized as possible. Lastly ,just to note. For dishes (yes .Im a little obsessed) i keep a cheap soap mix, like $1 store brands ,XTRA is good for lightly soiled dishes and a good smelling ,like green apple Dawn for heavy pots and pans. Love it!

  15. So
I 4got i was a all purpose cleaning post. I have not mixed the borax in yet. Im about to try it now. Iv read the borax clogs spray bottle. Does that Not happen if it's boiled ? Im about to wipe down walls. Painted walls. They seem to collect ALOT of dust and soot. Iv been wiping them weekly. Honestly use PinSol , or my other mix (vinegar with a bunch of EO's, iv also found that simple water distilled. With peppermint EO really seems to whiten. Iv got an Ant ,and spider issue here.2 huge trees outside both bedroom windows. So iv got alot of cleaning methods. Just looking for one tonight, that might help reduce the amount of weekly soot and dust..(allergies) sorry for rambling..im about to pull an all-nighter (???) And was writing thoughts as drinking coffee. Ok
Thanks. I'll be mixing the borax, baking soda and Dawn and vinegar. And. Think I'll dip a magic eraser in it..(so ,not a spray bottle) ...whoever came up with the hot vinegar and dawn in the 1st place! GENIUS...
